Crazy times in the Kootenays
It all started a while back when some moisture laden clouds rolled over the Purcell mountains and started dumping sh*t loads of snow. At first, the town folk were happy because it meant that they were going to get to ski untracked pow. It snowed some more ....... and the town folk were even happier because they were going to be getting face shots. It snowed so much that the town folk couldnt go on their backcountry trip. Instead they convoyed down to the Kootenays and skied around Cranbrook for the long weekend. This a collection of their tales.
Tale #1: The calgary folk got up at the crack of dawn and drove to a little town called Jaffery. There we met up with Al and Kenny and headed up to Powder Cowboy, a cat skiing operation.
We did one run before the snow cat waved us down and asked us to assist in a avalanche rescue. As it turns out, we didnt have to rescue anybody, but aric and jen did have to mend the severely broken leg of a skidoo rider. In repayment for our wasted afternoon, the guides gave us a free ride to the top of the mountain in their cat.
Tale #2: A trip to old faithful was on the cards for saturday after the gong show the day before. Things didnt start off well when one pole was misplaced. The team quickly rallied and fashioned together a magnificent replacement made of premier Kootenay willow (photo above).
Overall a great day was had by all (some ski pants were soiled on the last run of the day, but that tale can wait until another time).
Al
Three meat and one vege.
Lines to be skied on another day.
